Castelló d'Empúries

Only 10 km from Roses you can visit Castelló d’Empúries, a town of considerable importancein the farming and tourism sectors that was historically the capital of the county of Empúries.

One of its outstanding elements is the Gothic parish church of Santa Maria, with a Romanesque bell tower, which Count Pere I attempted to have declared a cathedral.

Another notable building is the old Llotja or exchange, in Catalan Gothic style (now the Town Hall), The “Court-Jail,” anotherexcellent example of Catalan Gothic, and the flour mill, which has now begun a new lease of life as an ecomuseum.

The modern residential marina of Empuriabrava, created in 1967 and basedon a network of navigable channels, also belongs to Castelló d’Empúries.
